Tartalmi kivonat:We report our seven-year experience with Ultrascan Digital B™ System IV ophthalmic ultrasound equipment in the diagnostics of lacrimal sac diseases. The following disorders were diagnosed by means of ultrasound: anatomical disorders (no. 2), inflammations (no. 85), mucoceles (no. 3), tumors (no. 3) and foreign bodies (no. 2). Ultrasound examination proved useful in indicating the surgical procedure in most cases of lacrimal sac disease, and in the examination of unsuccessful cases after operation without need to use any other diagnostic imaging method. Only in complicated cases was computed tomographic dacryocystography also used, or in cases of tumor, computed tomography with intravenous contrast material. The recently introduced color-coded Doppler ultrasound method was also applied for the differential diagnosis of tumors and for planning tumor therapy. The advantages of ultrasound diagnostics of the lacrimal sac over conventional or computed tomographic dacryocystography are that it is simple, quick and inexpensive; the patient is not exposed to radiation; it can be used without any contrast medium; and it is useful when the common canaliculus is occluded. Ultrasound examinations are suggested as first choice in the diagnostics of lacrimal sac diseases.
