| Tartalmi kivonat: | The Crimean Tatars who acted as Ottoman reinforcements on the Hungarian front during the 16th and 17th centuries had the task of making insettling attacks and incursions on their enemy's borders. The Turkish and Tatar sources hardly make any reference to the tools they had at their disposal and to how they got information about the lands they had to attack and the armies they were likely to encounter. From the little evidence that we do have one can only suppose that the Tatars got their information direct from the theatre of war by forcing the peoples of the conquered territories to spy for the Tatar army. The knowledge that we do have has been gained from a report of 15th September 1663 made from the testimony of a captured Tatar spy. From this testimony one can see that the Tatars had an extensive spying network which had been organized by a German soldier in the pay of the Tatars. The Tatars paid the spies for their service and also rewarded them with a portion of their spoils. The captured spy's testimony refers not only to the 1663 Turkish campaign but also provides the answer to an old Ottoman problem. The Turkish traveller, Evliya Celebi, was able to report on what had been discovered on the Tatars incursions and in doing so was able to provide information from as far away as Brandenburg, Holland and even Sweden. Researchers agree that Evliya Celebi never actually went to these countries, but one can presuppose that such information had been gained from conversations with spies who had worked for the Turkish cause. |
