Tartalmi kivonat:The European Economic and Monetary Union has so far been the greatest achievement of European economic integration. Though its history does not date back to the very beginnings of European integration, the first attempts for a monetary integration in Europe were formulated as early as in the 1960s. Eventually the Delors plan was implemented and the common currency, the euro was introduced in 11 member states of the EU in 1999. The currency union currently accounts for 19 members. The latest financial and economic crisis has definitely been the largest stress test so far for the Eurozone, and for the EU as a whole too. The monetary union is still an unfinished construct but a lot of institutional development has been undertaken since the outburst of the crisis.
