Tartalmi kivonat:The Victorian age is labelled as the age of the industrial revolution, economic and social progress. However, there were serious problems under this surface. In this thesis I look behind the scenes and through the example of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance ofBeing Earnest I examine the reasons which could force many people including the author himself, to form another identity in order to feel secure and free from the conventions oftheir age. Analysing some relevant quotations of the play and using other sources, such as reference books and the Internet, I will demonstrate that all the characters ofthe play lead double lives and create themselves a nonsensical world where everything is possible. I will prove that the play is the author’s verdict on the contemporary system and that people, like Wilde, who were unable to fulfil the expectations of society, escaped from it by living in another self-made world.
