Tartalmi kivonat:This thesis examines the literary merits of the short stories set in the Far East of the English writer, W. Somerset Maugham. I will prove that at least this part of his oeuvre deserves the permanent success it enjoys, and that it should have more reputation in English literary history than he has received so far. After presenting some general facts like his authorial method, most frequent topics, types of characters and local colour that serve as indispensable background information, I will support my views by theoretical works on the theory of literature and reception-aesthetics. In the last part of my thesis I will demonstrate that Maugham's most important and modern devices used in his narrative are plotting and his narrative techniques by characterising a major group of short stories that deal with the up-todate problems of alienation and self-fulfilment with the characteristic Maughamian irony, far beyond simple moralization.
