Tartalmi kivonat:In the 1890s, the representatives of the nascent political Catholicism did their utmost to prevent the adoption of liberal ecclesiastical reform laws. From 1893 onwards, Catholic rallies were held in rural towns against the reform plans. The third event in this series was held in Szabadka. This study examines how the local and metropolitan press handled a regional event, which, due to the circumstances, gained political importance on national level. The press coverage of the Catholic assembly in Szabadka reflects the increasingly polarised Hungarian public opinion of the period. In many cases, the general political orientation of each newspaper predetermined which aspects of the assembly were covered and which were more likely to be silenced. It is also clear that there was a growing distrust of the capital’s press, a phenomenon of anti-journalism among Catholic citizens. Divisions existed, but they did not become exclusive.
