Tartalmi kivonat:The culmination of restrictions on immigration to the United States in the 1920s resulted in the restructuring of migration trajectories and had both inter-American and transatlantic repercussions. Simultaneously with the end of mass immigration to the USA from Central and Eastern Europe, including Hungary, and due to Canada opening its border to formerly non-preferred nations as well, the northern neighbor of the USA became one of the main destinations of Hungarian immigrants. The restrictions, however, also created a space for illegal immigration, with Hungarians also attempting to cross the US-Canada border unlawfully. This article presents this so far neglected topic by introducing how and why illegal immigration was seen by some Hungarians as a viable alternative to legal immigration to the US and Canada due to changes in migration policies, and discusses the extent and perception of this phenomenon in Hungary based on the analysis of archival sources, contemporary newspaper articles and reports.
