Tartalmi kivonat:The purpose of this essay was to see whether the actions and letters of one of the most prominent popes of the Christian Middle Ages, who was the youngest to ascend the throne of the Holy See, served the purpose that one of his predecessors, Pope Gregory VII, had wished, which was that the Christian world should be united and all things should be subordinated to the Church. In this essay, I have presented the life of Pope Innocent III from his youth, through his upbringing to his becoming Pope, and from there his further actions which culminated in the Fourth Crusade through the Fourth Lateran Council. The historical significance of Pope Innocent III is that from the popes of the medieval age, he was the one to have realised the sovereignty of the papacy in his own state, and the primacy and leadership of the papacy as a religious power in the spiritual space. This religious primacy and leadership was recognised for a while by the Western medieval society because the spiritual power of the Church and the moral authority of the papacy were so prevalent in society, in politics and in the economy. In my opinion, it is not possible to get a complete picture of the issue by writing a thesis, but to understand the aim of Pope Innocent III to unite Christianity is, in my opinion, possible by studying the present thesis.
