Tartalmi kivonat: | The Treaty of Trianon was signed almost 104 years ago, but it’s impact is still showing. A country was cut up, which impacted every aspect of life. The Hungarian press constantly monitored the peace negotiations and presented the news to its readers. The aim of my research is to describe and analyse the level of detail and accuracy with which news was reported in various contemporary press products, in order to show how credible a picture of events was given to readers. The main sources of my research were six contemporary presses: 8 Órai Ujság, Az Est, Budapesti Hirlap, Friss Ujság, Népszava and the Pesti Napló, which I chose based on the principle of looking at a news story from different angels. The newspapers are complemented by literature and archival sources. In the case of the press, the censorship during this period limited the research to a certain extent, as in several cases parts of the news were not published. Therefore, only the authorised texts are included in my analysis. The texts are mostly not linked to a particular journalist. The majority of press organs refer to the Magyar Távirati Iroda, the Havas news agency, the newspaper’s correspondent in the field or the so-called „szikratáviratok”. In several cases there were inconsistencies and revision of news reports, so contradictions were found in several cases, even within the same issue of a newspaper. With regard to the departure of the peace delegation, it can be seen that an objective report is being made, with no emotional charge, only in some cases, but most of these are related to the demands imposed on Hungary by the peace treaty, and are not driven by ideology but by protest against the injustice done to Hungary. In the case of the report written by Praznovszky, it was noticeable that, as it was not written for the press, the content of the report was published in the newspapers, but there is a certain degree of discrepancy between the articles and the telegram. The contradiction between newspapers and within a newspaper can be seen in several instances in relation to the scene of the signing. This suggests that the newspapers did not follow up the details and were not consistent. It should be noted that sources also contradicted themselves, for example, there were two news reports from the Havas news agency, but both reported different locations. |
