The incursions started from Banja Luka and proceeded in two directions: a) towards Ljubljana, Carinthia and Styria; b) towards Fiume, the Karst, the Isonzo and the Friulian plain. The protagonists of the raids were the Akinci, irregular knights, enlisted in the Western Balkans and included in the Ottoman army. They were agile and skilled horse archers. During their raids they committed unspeakable atrocities. They fought with ardor driven by the desire to make loot and by religious motivations as well, they attacked inhabited centers, they procured agricultural and food products, they captured livestock, they also took possession of young people or of important prisoners whose ransom they could demand; they burned and destroyed entire villages. The last incursion took place in 1499. The Republic of Venice then fortified itself and strengthened the banks on the Isonzo: the Akinci would never be seen again.
