Tartalmi kivonat: | Rambling on Petőfi at the Tavern of Missed Time The poem in question is inspired by an old Roman tavern, called Osteria del tempo perso, which really existed in Rome in 1892 along the ancient Via Ardeatina. I imagined it as a place or, should one wish, “non-place” of my thinking. This place-non-place for József Pál could be Dante's Divine Comedy, of which he is a great devotee. In this place-non-place also surely lies my love for Sándor Petőfi, which in my case ended up being one with my love for Hungary and its culture, which of course is not only Petőfi, it goes beyond Petőfi, although it cannot be separated from Petőfi, whose 200th birth anniversary was celebrated in 2023. Here, that place-non-place of my imagination, where my identification with the Magyar poet took place, is one of the many “taverns of missed time”, where we intellectuals, writers, poets, translators, literary critics often find ourselves unwittingly-or, perhaps who knows (?), consciously. The Petőfian path that can be followed - or chased? - from the vantage point of the imaginary missed time tavern of my imagination is so long and varied as to be difficult to be contained in the cramped space I have been given. Nevertheless, I will try. |
