Tartalmi kivonat:Somalia is the most infamous maritime piracy hotspot of the modern era. Somali piracy drew the attention of the international community to this global matter. After the civil war ended the rule of Siyaad Barre the country left without a functional government. Many foreign corporations took advantage of the situation and started illegal fishing operations in the Somali exclusive economic zone. Somali fishermen took up the gauntlet and tried to defend their waters and livelihood. So they teamed up with local militas and started to attack foreign vessels. Piracy quickly became a really successful activity in Somalia and pirates began to focus to other merchant vessels, as well. There are many factors which helped the rise of piracy in Somalia: its history, economic system and diversification all contributed. These factors also made Somali piracy really unique. For example vessels with acceptable fishing licence only required to pay a minimal fee (in the name of „economy protection”). Also, „honor among thieves” is rule that Somali pirates follow. Moreover, pirates does not act like criminals onshore: they follow the rules of their clans. Some pirates even act like modern Robin Hoods because they invest their earnings locally or regionally. Although, due to joint navy operations, piracy managed to be suppressed in the area, pirates will instantly continue their activity as soon as the warships leave Somali waters because piracy became a sort of way of life in Somalia.
