Tartalmi kivonat:This publication deals with the quantitative and qualitative demarcation and classification of Hungarian settlement areas in the neighbouring countries of Hungary (in the Carpathian Basin), and the analysis of their socio-economic positions. A total of 39 Hungarian settlement areas could be identified which are mostly groups of settlements organized around urban centres. Four main types can be identified: areas with an ethnic Hungarian majority; areas with ethnic Hungarian-dominated urban settlement; areas with non-Hungarian majority; and diaspora areas. Some social and economic indicators can be analysed in these areas comparing them also to the average values of Hungary and the encompassing surrounding state. For instance unemployment rate decreased in most of these ethnic Hungarian areas between 2011 and 2016, proportion of the registered unemployed in the vast majority of ethnic Hungarian areas is less favourable than in Hungary and in the neighbouring countries. Aging affects more the ethnic Hungarian areas which are in an economically more favourable situation.
