Tartalmi kivonat: | The secret of his life, the story of his conversion was not even known to his wife. The religious peasant community ofJászárokszállás took him in. His literaly activity was also in line with their mentality and tastes. His main work is „The Holy Scriptures in Verses". He put into verse the chapters of the Old and New Testament omitting parts and interjecting interesting apocryphal stories. He draws both from literary pieces and his rich imagination. The fact that our medieval codices already contains extractsis verse from the Bible, shows that Lajos Varga continued literary heritage and fulfilled the needs of rural community age when he published „The Holy Scriptures in Verses" in 1899, at „Egri Nyomda" in 17,000 copies. Apart from biblical texts the book contains prayers also. This indicates that it was not just written as simple reading matter but was intended to be a handbook for rural domestic worship and for Catholic life sanctified by prayer. The fact, that he marks at the verses which melody they are to be sung with shows, that it was written with a practical intention. When reading the picturesque description of the countryside we are reminded of the Hungarian villages and meadows. The biblical characters and stories often show the influence of the motives of Hungarian folk poetry. In itsrhythm and rhyme it is often related to the Hungarian folk songs. |
