Description
Summary:In the study the author collected and analyzed the midwifery data of formal researches in the popular use of herbs in the Hungarian speaking area and compared them with earlier recipes of herbs. These 133 herbs were collected used in the popular midwifery for different problems from the conception to the weaning. Most of the herbs were applied to treatment of wound, assuaging of pain and problems of indigestion and diuresis. However, they could not cure the complications of pregnancy and birth as the anatomy of the inner female genitalia was not known. According to the data the herb use in popular midwifery was rather rational. Magical elements can only be recognised in the mode they applied these herbs (censing) in cases when they could not help in other way. This is very little congruence among the recipes of popular midwifery and formal herbs. These similarités shows remblance with the gynaecological advice of the manuscript, Pax Corporis, written by Ferenc Pápai Páriz. In the alternative midwifery both abroad and in Hungary - in contradicion to the medicinal treatment of general surgery - the renaissance of herb-usage can be recognized, which is based on popular and traditional midwifery experience.
