Tartalmi kivonat: | In my paper, I analyze life histories which represent a special genre between folklore and literature. The ethnological research of life histories began only in the last few decades in Hungary as a part of personality research. The individuals who shared their life histories with me as the subjects of my research are the members of a special community, a new monastic order. While making life history interviews, I tried to shed light on the process, through which they got to realize their vocation as nuns and then, by entering a given convent, they accepted a new lifestyle. I analyzed the stories told to me from two points of view. First, considering the textual aspect, I present the external circumstances and internal factors characteristic of the speakers which influence the composition, the structure and the presentation of the life histories. These are subjectivity, evaluative remarks, normative statements, selectivity and the confidential relationship developed between the interviewer and the interviewee. In the second, content oriented approach, I present the formation of the vocation, the entering in the convent and the way of life there considering also the connection between the individual and her immediate environment. I try to point out that the special spirituality and lifestyle of nuns seems astounding for today7s society and those who chose this vocation do not always receive positive responses from their families, friends and acquaintances. The transition from the old way of life to a new one involves renouncement, but at the same time it brings about new demands, values and the transformation of the former network of relationships. |
