Tartalmi kivonat:The Hungarian nationalism had three important and specific elements.1. It was full of fear. The principal reason for the fear was the possibility that the Hungarians could easily be overwhelmed by the mighty waves of the Germans and Slavs. Perhaps they could disappear in the ocean of Slavs. Perhaps they could come to an end by becoming Germanized. Each of these possibilities was worse than the other.2. Hungarians thought that they are being the underdog. They were groaning under the yoke of the Tatars, the Turks, and the Habsburgs. They could also list facts to buttress their claims. To be sure, the facts appeared in such a cultural-anthropological setting in which the past and the present were hard to distinguish. (It has happend in the case of Pols too.)3. Hungary as a country is female; Hungarians as a nation is male. The masculine role means that the nation had to be able to protect the female i. e. the country. The Hungarians could not defend the country that’s why they became frustrated. These elements worked together. The Millennium of Hungary represented the official values and statements of Hungarian state in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The most important values were the idea of territorial integrity of Hungary and the Hungarian superiority of Hungarians. These values could not survived: twentytwo years later disappeared not just the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but the greater Hungary and the Hungarian supremacy too.
