Tartalmi kivonat:Similarly to other towns, Eger used to be divided into smaller parts; districts and quarters. From the beginning of the 18th century quartermasters mediated between the authorities and the inhabitants of their respective quarters. Furthermore, they kept order and maintained the virtuous behavior of the locals. The in-stitution of quartermasters in Eger was peculiar because after the discontinuance of the administrative tasks it retained its traditional activities and remained to be a part of social life until the middle of the 20th century. It was suspended in the time of communism but it was called into being again in 1996. The study shows that the bond between the quartermasters and Christianity is still strong in the 20th century. When choosing a quartermaster, religiousness and irreproachable morals were essential. Quartermasters today operate in accordance with Christian morals. Priest quartermasters are also elected, whose job is to care for the spiritual well-being of the members. Newly elected quartermasters take the oath on February 9, the day of Saint Apollonia, and they take part in a mass in the cathedral in Eger. Chosen for one year, dressed in their typical black cloak and wand they also walk in processions, where they used to be present with glowing candles. The quarters used to give torches and candles for funerals, and the quartermasters would appear at burials of their deceased companions. Even today their important tasks include helping those in need and maintaining reli-gious traditions. They not only take part in religious and social programs in Eger, but they also go on a pilgrimage to Csíksomlyó every year.
