At this time the international community declared Somalia as a failed state. In 2000’s the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) ruled Somalia, but its domination was short-lived because of the counterattack of an interventional alliance. After the ICU’s fall the al-Shabaab ascended. This organization has been remarkable enough so far, altough, they lost significant areas between 2012–2013. The other important element is the clan system, because it encompasses the entire Somali society and controls it. The relation between al-Shabaab and the clansystem is more and more notable, as the alShabaab realised to retain its power the strong connection with the clans inevitable. Altough, this relation is vulnerable. My paper’s main question is whether the al-Shabaab is able to exceed the clansystem as it said at its founding. | |
