Tartalmi kivonat:In my lecture, I present the career history of János Cherrier, an adventurous and less known printer and publisher. Cherrier had German and French ancestors, he was born in Nagyõsz of Torontál county in 1839. After studying in Vienna, the printer moved to Nyitra, then to Léva. He created a printing house in both cities, as in Gyöngyös from 1866 to 1871. Then he and his family moved to Szentes which town has become the most successful place in his life: Cherrier had a printing house, a paper shop and several local newspapers – practically he was the creator of the modern public press in Szentes. However, Cherrier, who was a Catholic, had financial problems after a while, and less and less able to identify with the opposition attitude of Reformed urban population. For this reason, he sold his business and, after a few months’ stay in Budapest, moved to Kunszentmiklós, where he also established a printing house and published a local newspaper. He died in 1886 at the age of forty-seven. His life is a good example of the press business of the Dualism era, which was characterized by successes and failures. His career is worthy of the presentation, because he was the first to set up a permanent printing house in four settlements (Léva, Gyöngyös, Szentes and Kunszentmiklós). On the other hand, he launched the modern public press in the latter two places, so his importance in the Hungarian economic and cultural history is indisputable.
