Tartalmi kivonat:The European Union has been being struggled against crises with different nature and origins for a decade by now, such as global economic and financial crisis result in the Eurozone crisis, mass irregular migration, terror attacks all around Europe, as well as the Brexit or the EU-wide strengthening of populist movements and parties. Besides pointing out the deficiencies of the functioning and the policies of the European Union, these crises started a new wave of scientific and political discourse about the future of the EU, which revolves around the differentiated integration (DI) and its types. This study aims to find out how the DI contribute the ‘ever closer unity’ envisaged by the Article 1 of the Treaty on the European Union by defining and analysing the types and legal means of differentiated integration, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of it and examining the question of differentiation outside the institutional and legal system of the Union. The paper based its conclusions and observations on the relevant integration literature, the primary and secondary EU law as well as the survey and analyzation of the differentiations which were formed in the framework of international agreements.
