Summary:The present study deals with the role of the state in the economy and the possibilities to control this role. Measurability of efficiency and the Hungarian characteristics of the role of the state are in the focus of this study, but these issues are organically linked to the notion of transparent economic management. The present study presents the place and the forms of state role from a hypothetical perspective, and then unfolds their practical application through Hungarian examples.
