| Tartalmi kivonat: | This paper investigates the diminutive affixes in Nganasan. Traditionally these affixes are classified as one group, the -ku diminutive affix and its variants -kii, -tjku, -rjku, -"ku, and -"ku. The author points out that these affixes are not homogenous but they form two groups both diachronically and synchronically. The first can be categorized as the -KU0 group which includes the affix -ku and its palatal variant -kii. Their etymological base is the PU *-kku diminutive morpheme and in the contemporary language they are attached to SgNom. word stems (SI). The other diminutive affixes (-tjku, -tjkii, -"ku, -"kii) form the -DKU0group. They can be traced back to the PU *-rjk» diminutive affix and in contemporary Nganasan they are attached to SgGen./PlNom. stems (S2). According to the author's examples, the nasal element of -DKU0 can regularly alternate with a glottal stop. This is a notable phenomenon because a nasal ~ glottal stop correlation in Nganasan, not recognized in the other two Northern Samoyedic languages, has not been established so far. |
