Tartalmi kivonat: | There is some confusion about the notion of pseudo-sentence in the descriptive grammar of the Hungarian language. This made me to elucidate this problem, first by following the interpretation of phrases with the same pseudo- prefix in the system of language layers, and secondly, by comparing some definitions of the pseudo-sentence to the notion of the sentence. My conclusion can be drawn as follows: Contrary to the ideal sentence, which fits in the system of language, the main and dependent clause of a subordinate complex sentence occuring as an independent text sentence (utterance), as well as an unstructured, unorganized and structured but functionally unorganized text unit is considered a pseudo-sentence. Being a transition between the syntagm and the sentence, the pseudo-sentence doesn't fully satisfy sentence characteristics due to its structural and/or semantic defectiveness, i. e. it is not characterized by grammatical conclusion and complete semantic content, and consequently, it doesn't convey a full message. This final conclusion hasn't satisfied me since texts have proved that the dividing line between a sentence comprised of a nominal list and a string of verse sentences made up of words or syntagms is growing more indistinct. It is punctuation that can only draw the line between the two, which occurs in the written form but not acoustically. According to this view, the circumscription of the pseudo-sentence is pretty feeble, since it exists visually but not acoustically. |
