Tartalmi kivonat:In this paper we analyzed the ways logical scope is expressed in neutral and nonneutral sentences. It was observed that since the operator positions in S-structure assign wide scope to the elements in these positions, the scope of these elements is interpreted in LF unambiguously. At the same time, S-structure is just one level of expressing scope. Other cases of scope which are not assigned a distinct syntactic position (practically any element outside the operator positions) are resolved in LF. Scope interpreted in LF (either independently from or depending on S-structure) is assigned heavy stress in Phonetic Form. For all cases, heavy stress has the function to express a certain kind of prominence and wide scope is just a subset of its functions. Gramar has been viewed as a complex of two aspects: those of generation and analysis. From the point of view of generation S-structure is only capable of partially assigning scope to its elements and scope is finally interpreted in LF. From the point of view of analysis, on the other hand, the hearer has a reverse starting point: the Phonetic Form with its Phonetic Phrases gives the semantic/logical framework of the sentence and on the basis of the relation of the PhPs of the sentence its logical scope relations are unambiguously interpreted in LF.
