Tartalmi kivonat: | “Fiume had an exceptional status within the Hungarian State, not only because of its geographical position, special legal status, or social and ethnic diversity, but also because of its unique political culture. The aim of this study is to present the most notable peculiarities of Fiume’s political life, especially the various claims and demands of city and the government, and the way these claims changed during the parliamentary elections. This study mainly focuses on the election procedure at the time, with special attention to the 1901 elections, which are considered a milestone in the history of both the State and the city. The processes, which had begun years before the elections resulted in the rise and spread of a new political trend. In 1901 the rivalry of the political parties and the election itself demonstrated on the hand the real power of these phenomena, on the other hand the problems that arose with them. The mentality in Fiume changed and the authority fell into the hands of a social class that governed the city from the background.” |
