| Tartalmi kivonat: | The present study analyses a 20th-century life story. The research subject, Albert V. rose through the ranks beginning from a peasant background, mostly due to his own skills, but sometimes luck was also necessary for the positive outcome. His life was parallel to the events of the socialist era; and the historical processes marked his life. In 1948 for example, he was expelled from the university, then their property was confi scated, and aft er the revolution in 1956 he was forced to return from his employment in the Ministry of Defence to his hometown, Polgár. But in 1968 he fi nally obtained great success as the president of the local ÁFÉSZ during the New Economic Mechanism. He lived his life by values of professionalism and honest work; the drawbacks of the period were less signifi cant in the process of remembrance. In his life story, the social mobility had an outstanding role: he was promoted to high positions, albeit having a half-peasant background, he presided the ÁFÉSZ for 15 years. Meanwhile, he was a member of the cooperatives’ National Supervisor Committee and for 5 years before his retirement, he became the vicepresident of the Cooperative Committee in Hajdú-Bihar County. His life refl ected his wide relationshipnetwork: for instance, aft er the confi scation of their property, he could fi nd an employment with the help of his acquaintances, and later his the people he knew from Polgár, as well as the connections he made in infl uential circles, all contributed to the positive outcome of certain situations. In addition, luck oft en had benefi cial eff ects on his life. It can be concluded that despite the fact that the period had a lot of pitfalls, and generally it was not easy to get on within the framework of the socialist system, his life story, thanks to the factors mentioned above, can be regarded as a success story. |
