| Tartalmi kivonat: | György Enyedi finished his Latin translation of Heliodorus's Aethiopica on 1St May 1592 as the preface of the manuscript informs us. The original copy has not survived, only its transcription from 1647. Enyedi's translation has probably never been published, although the whole appearance of the text suggests that it was meant to be. The translation is dedicated to Sigismund Báthory, the young Prince of Transylvania. It is very remarkable that Enyedi emphasises several times — first on the title page, than in the prolegomena — that his work was the first Latin translation of Heliodorus's Aethiopica, whereas it came out in print in Stanislaw Warszewicki's translation forty years ago, in 1552. The following study tries to decide whether the Aethiopica's earlier translation has indeed escaped Enyedi's attention or he intentionally keeps silent about it. |
