As the title suggests, women writers of the age contributed to the development of the English novel. Moreover, women, as a separate literary group, were considerably determinant in Victorian literature and the increase of reading- public at the turn of the century also induced them in the creation of the novel. I believe, that early nineteenth century authoresses were able to write novels that satisfied the women readers of the age as well as the present time. I am an enthusiastic reader of Victorian fiction too, and I consider novels by Austen, the Brontös and Eliot really fascinating. Indeed, that was my reason for going into deeper investigation of this topic. In the first chapter I am going to outline the historical background of the age and I provide a general view of women in Victorian society. Afterwards, I will examine the situation of feminine novel writers in details and their possibilities of writing, including the adoptation of the male pseudonym and their attitude to womanhood and motherhood. Finally, in the last chapter, I intend to describe the heroine types authoresses implied to project the restrictions of women and their lives. | |
