| Tartalmi kivonat: | In my thesis I write about conflicts in Hungarian-American communities between 1880 and 1956. This period includes four -smaller or bigger- immigration waves: 1) the first bigger wave between 1880 and 1910; 2) intellectual-professional immigrants in the early 1930s; 3) political immigrants between 1944 and 1949; 4) and those who immigrated from Hungary after the Revolution of 1956. The aim, the purpose of these waves was totally different. This difference resulted conflicts in the life of Hungarian-American communities. As the waves of Atlantic ocean bang against each other when there is a storm so banged the immigration waves against each other in their conflicts. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (1996) explains the meaning of the word "conflict" so: "1(a) serious disagreement; an argument, (b) a struggle; a fight, 2) a serious difference of opinions, wishes etc." In this thesis I focus on the latter meaning. I try to depict the difference of opinions of these four waves which resulted in conflicts. I search the answers of these questions: What was the source of their conflicts? What did or did not immigrants do for arranging differences? How did different waves meet each other? Why was the assimilation easier fot this group than for that group? What were the main conflicts of the Hungarian communities in the U.S.A. globally? I hope more or less I could answer these questions. |
