   <subfield code="a">Hungary lost the majority of its former economic infrastructure with the Treaty of Trianon, including its maritime port in Fiume and the fleet registered there. It was left with the masses of unemployed professional sailors, pressure from the Little Entente, and the need for independent foreign trade. This study uses the available historical sources to demonstrate how economic and state actors attempted to revitalize the dormant Hungarian maritime sector, how did the port of Fiume become a valuable transhipment point once again, and finally how the Levant turned into a primary trade destination in the Hungarian economy. The study focuses on the first half of the Horthy era to present the story of the failed shipping line between Fiume and Smyrna, then to contextualize the processes leading to the river-sea transportation on the Danube in the 1930s.</subfield>
