| 520 | 3 | |a During the expansion of the royal palace in Buda at the end of the 19th century, the three historical memorial halls were constructed. These halls evoked three significant periods of the building and Hungarian history in the style of that era. In the middle axis of the facade on the side of the Danube was the Habsburg Hall, that housed the white marble busts of Habsburg rulers by Károly Senyei. One of these was the bust of Queen Elisabeth. The hall survived the siege during World War II in a relatively good condition, but it was still demolished in the 1960s. The statues were disposed of, but three of them found their way into the Budapest Gallery. The busts of Maria Theresa and Charles III were displayed in the 1990s in the Castle of Gödöllő, and later in the Budapest History Museum. Elisabeth’s bust, due to her renewed cult, was planned to be displayed as a public memorial in Szarvas in 1987, but in the end it received a similar, commemorative function in the Korányi Institute, which was previously named after the queen. | |
