Like Virgil's Aeneid, the Hell of the Comedy is populated by a wide variety of monsters, one of which can be considered as a literary example of the iconographic image of the Hellmouth. My study will begin with an examination of the sources available to the poet, both verbal and visual (ut pictura poesis), followed by an examination of the characteristics, symbolism and role of this creature in the work. Finally, it ends up dealing with the Dantean inventions, highlighting the changes brought about by the integration of the mixed creatures into medieval thought taken from ancient cultures and the elements fitting into his poetic conception that Dante adapts from the sources at his disposal.
