   <subfield code="a">During World War I the powers of the Entente began an unintentional arms-race amongst themselves to solidify their power and secure the seas from the German u-boot campaign. After the defeat of Germany and the Central Powers the expensive and long ship construction was not curtailed, and a war between the three strongest powers was growing more likely. Before a potential war, however the economy of the Unites States, Great Britain and Japan couldn’t support the war material they were building, so they agreed to stop building battleships, and to scrap semi-finished works. The resulting treaty called the Washington Naval Treaty laid down the foundation of interwar ship construction for all major naval powers. The focus of this paper is Japan. I plan to analyze the effects of the treaty on Japanese ship construction and to describe how Japanese engineers tried to circumvent the limitations of the treaty. I large portion of this paper deals with the ongoing cruiser revolution and how it affected both the diplomatic situation of the great powers and how it affected the next treaty, the London Treaty.</subfield>
