The survey was conducted in April and May 2006 in Vajdaság, Serbia. It was carried out in cooperation with the Youth of the Future — the Hungarian Youth Association (a Jövő Fiataljai - Magyar Ifúsági Egyesület). We could rely on the invaluable help of the Hungarian Teachers' Association in Vajdaság in compiling the questionaries and sending them to the chosen elementary schools. Youth of the Future- the Hungarian Youth Association was formed on 19, February 2005 in Újvidek as a separate, and non-profit civil organization being independent both from the state and the parties. The goal'. of the Association is to protect and :implement the rights of students in the elementary and secondary schools as well as in the universities. It strives to ary . develop the . relationship between the : Hungarian youth in Vajdaság and their companions in the mother country and in the Carpathian basin. The organization encourages them to get to know their environment, the world where they live, and it also assures oppurtunities of entertainment and culture. The significance of this survey arises from the fact that this is the first time that such a survey has ever been conducted among Hungarian students in Vajdaság. It helps to answer such key questions like the sphere of interest of the youth, the preferred professions, the deficiencies of teaching in Hungarian in secondary schools, the formation of their career and the first steps, oppurtunities of travel and accomodation, their 'f náncial position, the attitude of teachers, and some knowledge about the entrance exam and the secondary schools, etc. In selecting the given questions, we took '::into consideration the specific characteristics of this age-group, their skill in textual analysis, and the occuring difficulties in connection with this problem. All in all, it results in a mixed structure of questions. There exist basic questions predicting the long-term development of tendencies, whereas most of them give a specific base of comparison for future surveys.
