Tartalmi kivonat:In the last fifteen years there has been a complex debate among experts in demographics in terms of the falling avarage number of children and low fertility rates in the Western world. Some arguments suggested that this phenomenon has rather to do with the changes of the values , while others were sceptical about these explanations and suggested that there are social and economic changes which don’t allow many couples to have children of the number of children they wish to have. There was need for large sample international surveys to realize, that the latter explanation was supported by the data, and since then, the term of the fertility gap is a key concept in demographics. This marks the difference between the children a woman wishes to have and the real number of children she gave birth to during her life. In our article we present the short history of the evolution of the concept and the demographical thinking on the issue, and we present our results for the size of the fertility gap in a region in Western Transylvania.
