| 520 | 3 | |a In recent decades, nuclear law has become a key area of public international law and has found its way into the states' domestic law. Simultaneously, the use of atomic energy and the safe operation of nuclear power plants have been strongly questioned, thanks to accidents since the 1980s, which have caused severe environmental damage and other adverse consequences. Interestingly, the first instruments of international nuclear law were not considering environmental aspects at all. Meanwhile, the growing public interest in hazardous activities led to the appreciation of ecological preservation, which has also found its way into the regulation of nuclear issues. In my research, I focus primarily on the last decade of international nuclear law, outlining the latest developments. However, when it is necessary, I also raise historical implications. The core international conventions are mentioned in which nuclear law and environmental law have been directly and indirectly intersected. Finally, I will examine the consequences of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and the recent happenings connected to damage control. In the first part of my paper, I summarise the path, how international nuclear law and environmental law approached. Later, the focus is on the effects of nuclear accidents, mainly the Fukushima accident from 2011, pointing out the new 'trends' of international nuclear law. Fukushima's happenings raised several concerns again towards using atomic energy as a source and questioned the nuclear energy's "clean energy source" title, which is a popular concept nowadays. | |
