Tartalmi kivonat:Due to some historical events (for example: Trianon Peace Treaty, revolution in 1956) many Hungarians live abroad as an another county’s citizens. The most recent modification of Act LV of 1993 on Hungarian Citizenship wants to respond to this situation and would like to strengthen their relationship with the motherland. This modification was a result of a long process: initially, in 1989, the Constitution declared that Hungary feels responsibility for trans-border Hungarians. After the millennium the question was whether Hungarian citizenship should be provided for them. After an inefficient referendum and many discussions, the modification of the Citizenship Law was accepted in summer 2010. However, changes only began with this modification. In 2012, the new Fundamental Law has come into force and – in its Article D – declared that „Hungary shall bear responsibility for the fate of Hungarians living beyond its borders, and shall facilitate the survival and development of their communities; it shall support their efforts to preserve their Hungarian identity, the assertion of their individual and collective rights, the establishment of their community self-governments, and their prosperity in their native lands, and shall promote their cooperation with each other and with Hungary.” Finally, the Act CCIII of 2011 on the Election of Members of Parliament awarded them with the right to vote on the national general parliamentary elections. I think the participation of the Hungarians beyond our borders in the parliamentary elections can facilitate their feeling of belonging to our cultural nation.
