Some section of the town wall have been successfully documented in many archaeological excavations over the past 30 years. Based on the pieces of research, the historical centre of Fehérvár had been surrounded by marshland in the Middle Ages. The medieval town wall was built on beam foundations because of the swampy ground. Where the town wall had run we excavated the beam foundation of the wall at a depth of about 4–5 m from the present-day ground level. We found wooden structures inside and outside the town wall too, the interpretation of which is problematic until we have information about the exact dating of the timbers. Gyula Siklósi assumed that the town wall along the borders of the dry land was built in the 13th century. According to the recent research, the Inner Town was surrounded by a stone wall in the 11th century. The chronology of the excavated beams and of the town wall is expected to be clarified after the samples are dated with scientific methods.
