Tartalmi kivonat:Lőcse (Levoca, Letschau), the chief town of Szepes County in the Kingdom of Hungary from the 12th century until 1920, was one of the important free royal towns on the route from Italy via Buda to Poland. The parish church of Saint James in the town square was one of the prominent stations of the European pilgrimage to SaintJames' tomb in Santiago de Compostela. This study presents one of the most remarkable 14lh century murals of the nave, which depicts the seven acts of charity (Matthew 25: 34-40) and the seven deadly sins, and draws a parallel between the two. All fourteen scenes show a wealthy bourgeois married couple performing either good or bad deeds. It is important to note that in each of these scenes, it is the man who is the primary actor; the woman merely accompanies him. The background to the acts of charity is composed of the beautiful Gothic multi-story buildings in the town square of Lőcse, as well as the Holy Spirit Hospital with its church and the city wall, standing by the Kassa (Kosice) Gate. In examining the individual scenes, the author remarks on the important role of visuality in teaching and in the pastor's work; the images are merely accompanied and supplemented by the inscriptions of German verse on the images. These excellent artistic representations are never merely illustrations, but always have an independent and deeper message to the spectator than the mere text.
