Tartalmi kivonat:In this paper I make contributions to the history of the Christian fasting regarding the purification of the senses. After a brief conceptual clarification and presenting a few facets of religious history, plethora of biblical testimonies and ancient Christian era practices are presented relating both to seasonal and Eucharistic fasting. This form of self-denial was brought to unparalleled perfection by the ancient friars, and then legally regulated in the Middle Ages. At the dawn of the early modem era, reformers criticized the Catholic practice of fasting, which the Council of Trent and the popes still intended to maintain. In modem times, new circumstances meant new challenges, which ultimately lead to more relaxed rules, but also new considerations, such as consistent compliance with obligations of status, bearing the cross of everyday work and life with patience, which, when combined with disciplining the body, bring us back to the original meaning of fasting. The practices of the Greek Catholic Church have also gone through transitions, shifting from initial rigorousness to more relaxed practices, but this facilitation was closely linked with receiving the sacraments more often and more regularly, which resulted in a special and productive spirituality. In modem times, Orthodoxy, too, strived to reconcile historical tradition with the modem world; while retaining the values of fasting, and at the same time respecting the believers' situation and life, it tried to realize merciful oikonomia through maternal care and love.
