Tartalmi kivonat:In this study I will compare the two mandate municipality rank cities between the two world wars – Győr, Hódmezővásárhely, Kecskemét, Miskolc and Pécs – based on the party preferences of the citizens and the voting results for the national assmebly and the parliament during the Horthy-era. In general we can say that on a national level the hegemony of the ruling party can be observed. There was no alternating regime however victory was rarely handed tot he ruling party candidates on a silver plate. In many cases they had to adapt to local conditions as regional associations and lobbyists did not automatically support the ruling party moreover often gave a price for their support. The proceedings and circumstances of the elections naturally depended on local and world political events. Due tot he tactics of the ruling party and the administration the opposition often claimed that they would have had the chance to win nationally in a clean election. After the second half of the 1930-s the competition betwen the left and far right opposition gradully grew more and more fierce. On the other hand we can conclude that during the Horthy-era the secret ballots of the two mandate municipality rank cities – similarly to those in Budapest and the other municipality rank cities – showed the ruling party and the opposition going head to head with the excpetion of the elections of 1920 and 1939.
