Although the medieval messcalendars kept him in evidence and the antiphony, a beautiful piece of the Hungarian Gregorian chants A progenie in the Codex Albensis is dealing with him. The officium written in verse which can be read in the new feast psalmbook Liturgia Horarum is a work of a Hungarian regular poet. From here origin the two hymns Urbs praecelsa Venetorum and Adest jam dies. The first one can be regarded to a Hungarian chant although originally it was written in Latin. We have tw o chants in verse which are not too old but they were published already in printed collections. The first one is the chant 300lh (Felmutat égbe, text from Bálint M agyar, m elody from the 16th century, the Sapphoic verse tune of song Siess, keresztyén from Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos) of the song books Szent Vagy Uraml/You Are Saint My Lord! and Hozsanna/Hosianna. The second one is the 528lh chant w ith the initial Üljük meg emlékét országunk fényének in the second volum e of the chants' book Katholikus Egyházi Énekek/ Catholic Church Songs from M ihály Szem enyei - G yörgy Kapossy, published in Eger, 1890. It can be counted here two songs of the song book Éneklő Egyház/Singing Church: Adjunk tiszteletet (267th chant) and Szent Gellért püspök, népünk térítője (296th chant w ith the text of Sándor Tóth. How is it possible that despite the only four songs and one Gregorian chant the author of this article has published a book with 27 songs and several Gregorianid chants (Antal József: Énekek Szent Gellértről. Makó, 1996)7 The age of origin and systematization (16th-17th centuries) was not favourable to the veneration of saints. It was the period of the Ottoman occupation, of Protestantism and Catholic reform and restoration, of giving up of the Medieval Hungarian liturgy (1629). But this situation does not exempt us from the task of the revival and improvement of the cult of St. Gerard an the level of our time. | |
