It is a phenomenon known mainly in southern Hungary, where the fieldwork was done, in Voivodina and in Transylvania. Weddings for priests are held in other parts of Hungary (e.g. the Paloc regions) as well, but the name itself (priest's wedding) is unknown. According to folk theory, priests marry the church and Jesus Christ. The priest's wedding can be interpreted as a compensatory rite: instead of a secular wedding a priest's wedding is organized as a substitution for the "normal" wedding. This was the original function of the party, while today, it is rather motivated by the community's demand for entertainment or the force of habit. The organization of these occasions is usually modelled on secular weddings, that's why several elements of weddings still can be found in them. In the course of the priest's wedding, individual elements play special roles. On the one hand, they add to the glamour of the party, on the other hand, reflect the new priest's scale of values, and the fostering of traditions is also present in them. Each newly ordained priest expands the structure of the priest's wedding with some elements significant to him. In the course of time, the priest's wedding has become simpler and several originally secular elements disappeared from it. Nevertheless, it is an interesting and colourful event. |
