Tartalmi kivonat:The study deals with how World War I affected the town of Csongrád. It reports how members of the town council, people belonging both to the Roman Catholic and to the Jewish creeds, commemorated the death of the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess, who had been assassinated in Sarajevo. As a result of the war, the army requisitioned most of the local livestock and the building of the just completed grammar school was converted into a military hospital. Because of the compulsory purchase of war bonds, the budget of the town went into deficit, and most of the inhabitants of the town got impoverished. Rationing of food was introduced and the funds originally allocated for the care of the orphans of the county were converted to military purposes. As if that had not been enough, a pandemic broke out in the last year of the war. The people who died as a result of the Spanish flu outnumbered those who died due to military action.
