Tartalmi kivonat:Modern European self-definition was based on the notion of the legacy of the Antiquity and Christianity. The representatives of the Jewish Enlightenment urged reform both in the internal cultural patterns of the communities and in the strategy for inter-group contacts with the outside world. In the case of the internal cultural patterns it aimed at an expansion and reorientation of the circu-lation of internal Jewish cultural goods, while in intergroup strategies towards the outside world it strove to prepare the Jews for an integration into the Gentile world and participation in the new possibilities found there. The modern Euro-pean self-image traced its own history as a unilinear development projected on the universal history of mankind. It traced this history back to Antiquity and regarded itself as being the peak of this cultural development. Within the Jewish Enlightenment, Jewish study of antiquities and Jewish folklore helped by giving a scholarly interpretation. The scholarly work in orientalistics and philology was linked to the academic interest of the German-speaking regions to the West. The modern traveling culture was the new phenomenon of the modernising urban middle classes. The travel literature also reflected to the cultural aspirations of the middle classes. Different institutional Jewish strategies were rooted in the bourgeois ethos. The travel writings reflected on the bourgeois lifeworlds, which were represented in the different newspapers.
