| Tartalmi kivonat: | R. Judah ha-Kohen Krausz (1858–1939) served as the orthodox rabbi first in Jánoshalma, later in Lackenbach. He became known as a talented preacher, a charismatic rabbi and teacher; his yeshiva attracted many students. Several dozen books were published under his name in Paks in Judeo-German. Their titles are usually familiar to those acquainted with Yiddish cultural history: Tsenerene, Simkhes hanefesh, Pele yoets, etc. Krausz’s edition of these works is interesting from many aspects, including content, language and audience. The present study tries to looking at these aspects. It examines the gradual language shift of Hungarian Jews in the second half of the 19th century, from Yiddish to German, and how orthodox leadership tried to halt this process, and concludes that the Judeo-German books of Krausz are examples of an attempt to preserve a transitional language, and through it, a distinct orthodox Jewish identity. |
