There have always been deeply religious people who felt the monastic life and family of St. Benedict appealing, but for one reason or another they had to live in the secular world. They lived their life according to the Regulus of St. Benedict, emphasizing the essential traits of the Christian life. At predetermined intervals they gathered and returned stroger in their faith to their daily lives. The ‘offer’ was the quest for the perfect Chrisitan life according to the Regulus and the Spirit of the Gospel. The institution of the oblate was created and spread to the effect of the Cluniac Congregation of the Order of Saint Benedict. At the late 18th and early 19th century these institutions died out. Later during the last two decades of the 19th century if was resurrected by differ-ent Congregations of the Order of Saint Benedict. | |
