Tartalmi kivonat: | The article examines the question of bells requisitioned and melted down for military purposes during the First World War through the example of Csongrád, a small Hungarian Catholic town. It examines the role played by the parish priest and the strategies used to save the bells. To assess the extent of the loss to the community it describes the bells in Csongrád before 1917, the way in which they were rung and the local characteristics of the bells.1 The research reveals the local characteristics of a changing set of customs under the influence of a historical event. The efforts made to save the bells illustrate the expanding moral and ethical role of the priesthood. |
