Tartalmi kivonat:I am doing my PhD research on the relationship of Charles I of Hungary (1301-1342) with the papacy and I consider it very important to analyse both the diplomatic and the narrative sources. In this paper I would like to present the conclusions of an examination that I have carried out on 1 ^-century chronicles written in French language. As there have been several researches on the information of medieval Hungary recorded by contemporary French narrative sources, I applied a different approach. I focused my examination on the role of the Avignon papacy in the descriptions, because the participation of the popes in European diplomacy attracted the attention of chroniclers. The corpus of my examination was constituted by the most important M^-century chronicles, namely the chronicles of Jean le Bel and Jean Froissart, Les grandes chroniques de France and the Chronique des quatre premiers Valois. I intended to answer question such as how different the descriptions are, whether there are any recurrent elements or motifs and which chronicler imparts the most reliable information. In the course of the analysis, I identified three historical events that were both informatively detailed in the chronicles and could have a significant influence on Hungarian history: the conflict of Louis IV with pope John XXII, the 14л -сепШгу crusade plans and the outbreak of the Great Western Schism. In the present paper, I summarize and analyse the information of the chronicles related to these three topics.
